South West Coast Road Trip

During this nine-day tour we will photograph some of the most spectacular coastline in the British Isles. The tour will begin from Dorchester where we will explore part of Dorset's Jurassic Coast before moving along the south coast of Devon, all around Cornwall, through north Devon and Exmoor before finishing on the north coast of Somerset (returning to Dorchester in the evening of 26th).

Although the main aim of this workshop will be to capture some spectacular coastal landscapes, seascapes and lighthouses, the itinerary will be kept flexible so that we can react to the weather conditions at the time. We may also head inland to Dartmoor to photograph woodlands and waterfalls.

Throughout the tour I will demonstrate techniques such as control of contrast through exposure bracketing, hyperfocal focussing, focus-stacking for front to back sharpness, use of neutral density filters for long exposures and how to find compositions within the landscape. At this time of the year I hope we will catch some dramatic light and maybe a storm for big waves!

PLANNED ITINERARY
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather conditions.

Day one: Arrive in Dorchester and check into the hotel. I will collect you at 2.30pm and we will head out for an afternoon/evening photography session along the Jurassic Coast. (Overnight Dorchester).
Day two: Check out early before a dawn shoot along the Jurassic Coast. We will then begin our tour along the beautiful coastline of Dorset and south Devon stopping at various locations along the way. After a sunset shoot on the Devon coast we check into our second hotel (Overnight Paignton).
Day three: Early check out in time for a sunrise shoot. We then continue our tour along the south Devon coast and into Cornwall in time for sunset (Overnight in St Austell).
Day four: Early check out in time for a sun rise shoot before continuing down towards Land’s End, which we aim to reach in time for sunset (Overnight Hayle).
Day five: Sunrise shoot and more time to explore the beaches, cliffs and coves of the Land's End peninsula (Overnight Hayle).
Day six: After a sunrise shoot we start to make our way back up the north coast of Cornwall with its amazing sandy beaches (Overnight Newquay).
Day seven: We continue along the spectacular and rugged north Cornwall coast (Overnight Bideford).
Day eight: We continue to explore the rugged coastline of north Devon, along with the hills of Exmoor (Overnight Minehead).
Day nine: We continue along the north coast into Somerset to explore more beaches and rocky coastline, finishing the day with a sunset shoot at Burnham-on Sea lighthouse. We then head back to our starting point in Dorchester (Overnight Dorchester).
 

Please bear in mind that we will be exploring quite a large area in order to get as much variety as possible, so there will be some quite lengthy travelling times between some locations (mainly at night). We will move to a different hotel for almost every night of the tour. We will visit locations based on the best time for lighting angles and tidal conditions, rather than taking the best route logistically!
